Hi All,

What are different words for mother in different languages spoken in Nepal? I want to write an essay on it. For example,

sanskrit - mata
nepali - aama
Rai -
Limbu -
Tharu -
maithili -

and more.

Thanks for your help!

Rai has several sub-caste into.
Every subcaste has each different language. You have to ask every Rai according to their sub-caste. E.g. for Thulung they call "maam".

Hope you find them.

Thank you Khumbule and 28th amendment.

So, it would be safe to say "Rai - Thulung" bhasa - Maam.

And "Rai in General" - Aambo

thank you pepsi and khoyo.

i am trying to compose a list of diiferent words for mother in Nepal. I will probably post the article (which is the list itself) in a website. I will post the link here once I get as many nepali mother words as possible. And please correct me then if I am wrong.

Are there any bhojpuri, awadhi, thakuri, tibetian, sherpa, and many more language speaking people here? I would love the inputs.

thanks.

Thakuri : Muwa, Muwa hajur
Newari : Maa
I know one of my sherpa friend used to call his mother as Amo, don't know whether that's a correct word or not.

Laure,

I was only being sarcastic to "Muwa Hajur of Thakuri"

I actually came to find out after i came to USA that Thakuri think they are different from Chetris.  I used to think they were all the same but some "thakuris" even get offended when called Chetris to them....lol

SAP Dude, the minute you replied, i knew that you were being sarcastic and i totally understand your sarcasm. I myself used think that Thakuri's are different but later after reading the history of Nepal and Nepalese especially the book of Dr Harka Gurung, i realized that Thakuri's are Chhetri's. The reason Thakuris don't consider themselves as Chhetri's is because of the Royal Family of Nepal who are also a Thakuri's. Thakuri's are originated from Chhetris, It's just that they wanted to call themselves different because lots of Thakuri's i myself have seen are very proud of their surname which i don't understand why? Also one of the other reason is may be because of their high class lifestyle. I am sure you've seen of the Thakuri's, Rana's (Hune KHane wala haru) That might be the reason.

But there's nothing to do with what you called your mother because i myself is Thakuri and i called my mother as Muwa. I don't know what in the world makes your laugh your ass out of that.

Karnali....i agree with you of your perception of Thakuris about Thakuris thinking themselves as " hune khane, dekhya sunya haru". Genetically, thakuris could be mixed with Magars or something...some do have some magar like physical features.

Anyways....coming back to the topic of names for mother......it seems like the sound of "M" is the first sound a child makes and the first thing he wants to call is his monther and hence all the cultures have their Mother sound starting from "Ma".

Now, may be the second easy sound for a child is "ba" and hence the sounds "Ba, Pa, and Pha is ther for fathers name.

thakuris have mixed more with the matwali castes(mainly magars ) of the west whereas other khas (chetris and bahuns) have mixed more with the north indians and rajputs.my  personal view!
