Schroeder Fellowship 2010 Awarded to Bisundev Mahato
Congratulations Bisun....
This year's Steven A. Schroeder Fellowship has been awarded to Bisundev Mahato for his proposal titled "Ambulatory Care Sensitive Conditions, High Variation Conditions, and Regional Variations in Health Care Utilizations and Costs." The highly competitive Steven A. Schroeder Fellowship is based at Harvard Medical School and is awarded to only one person for work in health care. In his proposal submitted, Mr. Mahato has proposed to look at data from Dartmouth Atlas Project and Current Population Survey to figure out whether high health care cost areas in the US is due to lack access to care, especially primary care, or due to lack of evidence-based medical practice and standardization of care. His work will also be useful in identifying population level policy targets. Mr. Mahato will be working on the project over the summer. The work is expected to have major policy implications for the US health care system. The results may help guide policy makers in Washington DC. Mr. Mahato previously worked as a Senior Economics Programmer at Columbia University, New York and also authored numerous reports for the Commonwealth Fund, a major health policy think-tank (http://www.commonwealthfund.org/Content/Bios/M/Mahato-Bisundev.aspx). His work has been featured in 2008 "OECD Economoic Survey: United States," (a publication by the OECD that focuses on the economy of a member country every two years) and has been referred by government and non-government agencies, including the Congressional Budget Office. One of Mr. Mahato's papers is a required reading in a graduate level New York University (NYU) course titled "Current Issues in Health Policy." The course is required for all M.P.A. health policy specialization students. Also in 2003 Mr. Mahato's report on the cost of health care for working New Yorkers and their families who lack health insurnaced had culminated in about 1,000 people marching to the Mayor's office of New York City, demanding better health care. In the future, Mr. Mahato, who is currently an MD candidate at Harvard Medical School, plans to combine health policy work with his clinical work.
