I was born in Nepal but am a US Citizen. I have been living in Kathmandu for about a year now in Non tourist Visa. I found a woman that I love and want to marry her in Nepali Court here in Kathmandu...and the problem starts.

We both went and registered at the CDO office here in Kathmandu.
We have submitted all the documents that they required except one.
The one that I did not submit was some document saying that I have given up my Nepalese Citizenship.
They want me to get a letter from Nepali Embassy in US saying that I have given up Nepali Citizenship and that letter goes to Foreign Ministry Office here and from there goes to Home Minister's Office and then to CDO's office. Then only they are going to give me a document saying that I am no longer a US citizen. This process will probably take a long time and probably have to stuff some cash in many peoples pocket.

They are asking me anywhere from 50 thousand to 1 Lakh rupees to speed up the process. This amount was asked by the man who works at CDO office. Even the layers that we talked to says that they have to bribe people here to get a letter saying I have given up Nepali Citizenship and that amount is reasonable.

They say if I do not want to give up my citizenship card it is going to cost me more.

Unbelievable .
Any suggestions.

I disagree. I had to deal with the CDO office several times, recently. I did not have to bribe anyone. I was done in less than two hours at the most. I was surprised by their efficiency, unlike US where even getting a lost SSN takes weeks even a month.

You need to know how to deal with the people. If you are having problems you should speak with the CDO directly. I found him helpful.

I can imagine being harassed just because non you are an NRN and people assuming that u have a stash of dollar to throw around. I dont understand why you have to produce a paper saying you are no longer a nepali citizen as you already have a US passport. Cant u just sign a waiver or something?

My suggestion to deal with this person asking for money is to secretly tape him asking for money and then giving it to newspapers....Or just make an appointment with his supervisor and tell on him. If you are just trying to get a Marriage Certificate then may be go to a different court. Also try to do it through CDO of different city if your fiance is from another city.
