I was wondering if anybody has knowledge about  number of years we have to work after EF.

I have six years of experience back in Nepal before I came here 3 years ago.

I have MS degree in Geotechnical engineering (graduated in Aug 08).

EIT taken in April 08 and passed.

Now working in a consultancy in Pennsylvania.

When do u think I can take PE exam?

Thanks for your inputs.

what is your experience in your field?  do you lead projects?  do you communicate/contact with clients?  do you prepare scope of work/budget/ man hour etc?  with PE tag, it carries responsibilities unless you dont wanna practice PE.  so, make sure you have enough knowledge and understanding in your subject matter.  like someone mentioned above, you have just started your career.  make yourself familiar with subject matter more, gain more experience and confidence.

Get WES evaluation or CPEES evaluation. WES evaluation is usually not well regarded by State Boards for PE Exam. So, your evaluation might prove just a waste of 180 dollars if you go for WES evaluation.

The WES evaluation does not tell that your degree is equivalent to ABET accrediation, but it usually says equivalent to a regular American Degree. CPEES charges about 450 USD for evaluation, and it goes step by step, every bit of your courses in Undergraduate Degree. Usually, Nepali Univ, and Indian Univ grads lack Psychology, humanity ... history, like subjects that may range 15-20 credits to satisfy the US equivalency. CPEES charges 60 USD for each copy of evalution you forward to them, while WES charges only 25 USD per copy. Well, WES evaluation is like a SONY brand Made in China, and CPEES is SONY Made in Japan. A dedicated collector will not buy a SONY made in china in a discount store when an authentic store offers Made in Japan at no discount. One has warranty, and the other has guarantee.

Usually, PE Boards don't care much on these social and humanity science subjects because we have more engineering subjects than required, and this is what I was told by the head of a state's PE board's degree review cmte. Our degree will be classified / categorized by CPEES evaluaters as REGIONALLY ACCREDIATED instead of ABET accrediated. So, instead of having a min 4 years of experience for ABET accrediated curriculum based engineers to be qualified for the PE Exam, the DPOR VA and other PE boards might ask you an extended number of years of experience: 6 years? Talk to them directly.

If you have a Masters degree in engineering from ABET Accrediated University. Usually, a university's undergrad course in engineering is accrediated and MS is not in accrediation list. When I was reading ASCE's news bulletine, if I remember correctly, an article gives the reason for not accrediating both Masters and Bachelor's degree was to reduce the burden on Teachers. A few universities have ABET accrediated BS and MS degree, but not all universities.

Some states tell that if you got Masters or PhD degree from a US Univ that has ABET accrediated BS degree, then you don't have to worry about evaluation from CPEES, and WES evaluation might work. It depends on state to state. I tried to file my application for PE Exam in three different states before I got my application approved by VA DPOR. As you know the basic PE Exam is the same nationwide, and California has some additional requirements and also the additional exams (Seismic part).

Before you run for ideas and thoughts from third person like us, it is better to talk to the admins at DPOR VA. There are some counsellors who might be of helpful, rather than relying on phone receptionist. They might ask you to pay 60 USD for application reviews (in VA), and 25 USD in Ohio (Ohio changed the rule and asks for CPEES evaluation). Without CPEES evaluation, it might be very hard to transfer your PE to other states by COMITY if in case you need it in future. So, sooner or later you will need CPEEs evaluation.

Good Luck.

Avagi Kale,
Usually it is four years of professional work experience after graduation with Bachelor's degree. In California, it is only two years unless it is changed recently. Your experience in Nepal may or may not count depending on the policy of the Board of Technical Registration in the individual State. Since you already have a Master's degree, it may count as equivalent to 1 (one) year of experience. The following site has  tons of good information for PE/EIT candidates.

Hope this helps and Good luck to you with your PE Exam.

Has anybody sat for a PE Exam in Virginia. I have BE from Pulchowk and MS from here. Virginia Department of Professional Regulation (DPOR) considered Bachelors Degree from Pulchowk is 'Non Approved Engineering Curriculum' since it is not ABET accredited. They also stated that my Master is not ABET accredited. So I need six years of work experience (in lieu of 3 yrs, for masters). They, however, gave a credit of one year for masters.
Has anyone dealt with this situation? Will experience of Nepal counts?

Abhagi Kale,

I am not sure what PA has on its policy for out-of-country experience, but I am sure other states give credit for foreign experience as long as you can document them. However, the credit may not be one on one, say, they may give a 3-year credit for your six year experience. That was what had happened to me when I was appearing on my PE examinations in Maryland. If PA state does not give your credit, you may try some adjacent states, such as Maryland or Delaware.

MaSingh,
Your experience in Nepal may count - please check with DPOR. Give them a call. Get in touch with other Nepali engineers who have recently become PE (believe me, there are several of us!). Last year I had helped organize a get together for Pulchowk Campus alums, and the turnout was surprising!
Please email me to get in contact of Engineers from Pulchowk campus. Some of them have been PE based on their BE from Pulchowk Campus and other qualifying experience. The best bet is to ask around.

Good luck with your exams. It feels good to see more and more Nepalis being licensed Professional Engineer!

GP ji - thanks for your great input and encouragement for  aspiring PEs.

Rishi

Thanks rbaral

I can try in Maryland for PE. But is it possible that  my license I get after passing exam from other state be transferred to PA? I had contacted to the PA board and they told me that I have to have four years of experience after FE.

If it is possible, could I get you e-mail so  that I can get your inputs in the future too.

You could get a PA - PE license based on Maryland license. Check PA state reciprocity requirements, they may have some requirements. Call them up.
If you feel there is anything I could provide you info with, please email me - sajha.com email is fine.

I contacted Virginia DPOR today. They said they may accept evaluation if foregin degree is evaluated from CPEES (Center for Professional Engineering Education Services). Has anyone evaluated their IOE degree from CPEES?? Looking at the requirements of CPEES, it looks like preparing necessary forms from Tribhuvan University IOE (form filled up by TU and sign and mail directly to CPEES) is almost impossible. Please share, if you have done evaluation before.

You don't need to pass a PE exam. After you pass the FE exam you are an EIT work for few years (i think 2-4 year depending on the state) then petition to the state board to get a PE certification.

I am trying to get my PE from Virginia. I have my BE from Nepal. I have my EIT from Florida. Now I have to evaluate BE degree. Do anyone have any idea which evaluation institution I should go for Virginia? I had mine previous one from Jsilny but Virginia board does not accept their evaluation. Please help me to find the evaluation company of which evaluation Virginia board will accept.

Thanks in advance for any info

I believe Virginia accepts NCEES evaluation only. You may want to check on that. Please note that Virginia requires ABET accredited BE. BE from Nepal is obviously not ABET accredited. Therefore you may want to have enough experience before you apply.

@GP: I tried to file my application for PE Exam in three different states before I got my application approved by VA DPOR.
How is DPOR convinced to approve your application without ABET accredited bachelor's degree???
