As he himself admits, his eccentricity is nothing new. I, in fact, admire his outspokenness and disregard for political correctness. He has a penchant for annoying the powers that be - whoever they be. Although, sometimes you have to take some of what he says with a grain of salt. Certainly an outlandish person who I am sure couldn't care less about what others, least of all Sajha users like myself, think of him :) One other thought - when you have such a flamboyant personality, I feel you risk not being taken seriously by others especially in a conservative society like Nepal. I have seen this happen to many otherwise bright and accomplished people and wonder if he has experienced the same thing. Thanks for posting the article, Sheetalb

AS A NON INVITED PERSON
Posted by Vivian McInerny September 09, 2007 16:33PM
He's almost famous.
Shail Upadhya goes to all the shows. Has done for years. He is one of the wonders of fashion week, the true diehard Fashionates who are more passionate about fashion that traveling Deadheads are for the Dead. The best thing is he always comes completely accessorized. His suits -- always wild colors and patterns -- shirts, ties, hats and bags are all of the same fabric. He doesn't usually have an invitation to a show but is happy to stand in line and wait for SRO. Once in a while, he gets seat.
"I used to have cards," he said when asked for a business card. "Now I have papers."
On a little piece of paper the size of a business card is printed: Stylist: Shail Upadya.
The Fashionate

I know him and lots of Neps know him...anyways I must mention he is known for what he does. He has big clients. He is one Nepali who has made statements with big desingers which has inspired many other nepali to be desingers.
It is a matter of taste and he seems to have ppl who love him. He is quite accomplished in the fashion industry much more than prabal. Their styles are very different.

The fact i admire is that he is persuing his dreams after his retirement and has the energy to do so.....I do not think even he is serious about his clothes.. he has spent enough time wearing black and white and now is choosing colors. ..

I admire Shail bro. He is a daring, eccentric and non-conformist. I admire people who are not afraid to be themselves and who dares to push the envelopes. He probably does not give a "shit" about our personal opinions too whether we like his taste or not.

If you guys don't get offended by my remark, I think he looks like Nepali Flavor Flav in those pictures.
Not that I don't like his attire, he looks great!
Very few people in this world have courage to express themselves in such a way at this age. I feel like I am a kid now. Way to go, Shail bro!

I want to know what SAMSARA wear's and if he has sense of style. You can't just bash someone when they are trying to be who they are. You need courage and guts to be and do what you think and what you are.
Do something with your life dwag, you are just jealous and you complain too much.

Well, it wd have been definitely easier for ppl to ctiticize if things were different,If he were not qualified.. ppl wd critcize ' Tyo Pakhe, padhna sadhna chhaina....'If he were working in some menial jobs, ppl wd say 'Tyo Pakhe, Dhotiko ma kaam garchha/ gas ma kaam garchha'If he were from some countryside of Nepal ppl wd say 'Tyo joker, Amrika k aauna paathyo, Fashion desgine re?'If he were not from politically strong family (see Koirala connection) ppl wd criticize 'Padhera kaam payena ani, Prachandako kapada design garchhu bhanchha, Neta banne shur hola'---- Ppl never cease to complain, for me he has done what he yearns for, and gives damn what the whole world think abt him. He has proved his mettle in every field, comin to US when we were not even born, completed studies, worked for the most reputed organisation and still livin his dreams...what else we can ask from a person? Thanks Sheetalb for sharin the news. Ive not heard abt him before (but read few lines in BP Koirala's work- as rahuldai mentioned). Im not concerned abt his clothing but his SAHAS and livin style is really something :-) Ive googled and found he is not so ordinary man. Hitting every ball even in second inning of life.
Peace and lets learn something from others

CHOR, before you get down and dirty to stealing anything outta the internet cafe you're in, read these lines from the article above (just in case you're missing those orbs in your face that us mortals call eyes): "He doesn't usually have an invitation to a show but is happy to stand in line and wait for SRO. Once in a while, he gets seat"...And he has the nerve to go back to KTM and preach as though he runs the New York Fashion Week?? Hell, the cat doesn't even have a seat!! HAHAHHA Atleast I give Prabal Gurung his dues here as he is an integral part of one of the major players in the NY Fashion Week. A shout out to my Gurung brothers!!!
And about motley fustilarians like you callin me jealous...About what?? Numbskull, that old man is a hundred years old...There's nothing to be jealous of someone as old as he. Hope you grow some brains, Mr. I see the Green Eyed Monster everywhere!!! HAHAHAH

Prabal Gurung, of course is the most recognised Nepali Fashion clothe designer in the US. He has done great job and still going great guns. Hats off to him and his hard work.I was totally amazed when I read these lines. Very happy for his success and we all should be inspired------------------Vogue, one of the world's premier fashion magazines, features actress
Angelina Jolie on the cover of its January 2007 issue. Jolie wears a
raspberry rayon matt jersey evening dress that drapes across her body
in perfect, sensual symmetry there's a sari-like hint to the drape of
fabric against her legs. The classic, elegant look comes from the
design table of Bliss Blass, a New York couture house with clients as
diverse as Oprah, Laura Bush, and Sigourney Weaver. What most Nepalese
dont know is that one of the designers of the label is Prabal Gurung,
whose rise to meteoric New York success rivals those of the best
stars. -A St Xavier's graduate, Prabal was the only one of his
class to study this field in 1990. Like all boys, he struggled to
belong, but was made to feel different. However, this very sense of
being different helped to push him to define his sense of identity
later on in life. Prabal went to Delhi, where he attended the National Institute of
Fashion Technology and worked for the Indian designer Manish Arora. So
when he was accepted to the Parsons School of Design, New York's most
prestigious school of fashion, of which Donna Karan, Marc Jacobs, Tom
Ford and other influential designers are alumni, I will feel a real sense of achievement when I am able to give
something back to my country. The day I can make a contribution to
Nepal, socially and/or economically, I'll consider that a job well
done.For detail : http://www.kantipuronline.com/feature.php?&nid=99909
