British Dwarf's Penis Gets Stuck To Hoover

Different Oops Other Regions Z-Show All 2007-08-21 02:17
EDINBURGH, UNITED KINGDOM: A dwarf performer at the Edinburgh fringe festival had to be rushed to hospital after his penis got stuck to a vacuum cleaner during an act that went horribly awry.

Daniel Blackner, or "Captain Dan the Demon Dwarf", was due to perform at the Circus of Horrors at the festival known for its oddball, offbeat performances.

The main part of his act saw him appear on stage with a vacuum cleaner attached to his member through a special attachment.

The attachment broke before the performance and Blackner tried to fix it using extra-strong glue, but unfortunately only let it dry for 20 seconds instead of the 20 minutes required.

He then joined it directly to his organ. The end result? A solid attachment, laughter, mortification and ... hospitalisation.

"It was the most embarrassing moment of my life when I got wheeled into a packed A&E with a vacuum attached to me," Blackner said.

"I just wished the ground could swallow me up. Luckily, they saw me quickly so the embarrassment was short-lived."

No More Live Sex-changes On Chinese TV

Disturbing Lifestyle Other Regions Z-Show All 2007-08-24 06:18
BEIJING, CHINA: China has banned a blood-spattered genre of reality TV shows where patients undergo sex-change operations and cosmetic surgery live in front of mass audiences.

The "exhibitionist" programmes serve the sole purpose of boosting viewer numbers and do not have a positive impact on society, the Beijing News on Friday (August 24th) cited authorities saying.

The notice banning the programmes, issued Thursday (August 23rd) by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, ordered TV stations to halt new productions and immediately stop ongoing programmes.

The notice said this was necessary in order to safeguard the credibility of the TV stations and ensure they maintain a benevolent impact on society, the paper reported.

"It's really disgusting, just horrible," it quoted one person saying after watching a live show in which a patient had eyelid surgery, a common procedure in many parts of Asia.

The in-your-face surgery programmes have proved popular in several parts of China. Typically the shows have featured a large studio audience watching surgery via a live TV feed to a clinic.

In one celebrated show in 2004, a 32-year-old man underwent a sex-change operation as the cameras rolled.

What gave the story a poignant touch was the fact that the patient, who had been born a hermaphrodite, had decided to become a male at the age of 10 - only to regret it 22 years later.

It is estimated that one million Chinese undergo plastic surgery every year, according to state media reports.

Maths Genius Wins University Place, Aged 9

Cool Other Regions Z-Show All 2007-08-24 05:26
HONG KONG: A nine-year-old maths prodigy was Thursday (August 23rd) admitted to a Hong Kong university, telling reporters he struggled to communicate academically with his own age group.

March Boedihardjo, an Indonesian-Chinese boy resident in Hong Kong, earlier this month gained two grade As and a B in his A-levels - normally taken by 18-year-olds - enough for a place at Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU).

He will begin his mathematics undergraduate course in September, the university authorities said. Earlier reports said he has been turned down by another university in Hong Kong.

The precocious youngster was presented to the media Thursday and spoke in both Cantonese and in English, toying with the microphone and yawning as photographers lightbulbs flashed around him.

Asked what he does in his spare time, he said: "Most of the time, I like to read books, but on the weekends I like to go out to play with friends," adding they play chess, Monopoly and cards.

"We can play games together but academically, we can't communicate."

Asked why he had not gone to school in the United Kingdom, he replied in English, "because my father does not have sufficient money."

The university has designed a special five-year course for Boedihardjo, leading to a masters degree, the authorities said.

Tony Boedihardjo, March's father, said the university had given him confidence they could cope with the particular demands of the nine-year-old.

"I am reassured that HKBU's distinctive whole-person education and its reputation for academic excellence will help March develop his talents in a complete way," he said.

Franklin Luk, president of HKBU, said the decision to admit the youngster was based on a "commitment to nurturing gifted students."

"Despite his age, March has achieved excellent examination results and also expressed himself admirably in our interviews," he told reporters.

"Therefore, following our initial assessment, we consider that it is suitable for him to pursue his studies at university level."

Man Says Florist's Note Wrecked His Marriage, Sues For 1 Million Dollars

Different Other Regions Z-Show All 2007-08-15 03:36
WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES: A US florist company which sent written thanks to a customer for his order of a dozen roses is now being sued by the man, who says the note tipped off his wife about the new love interest in his life.

US media reported Tuesday (August 14th) that the company - called 1-800-Flowers, after the phone number customers dial to place their orders - sent a written acknowledgment to Leroy Greer for his 100-dollar order of an arrangement of one dozen long-stemmed roses and a stuffed animal.

According to the report carried by the American Bar Association Journal, a legal publication, the note was spotted by Greer's wife, who placed a call to the company seeking clarification about the order.

The floral company faxed her a copy of the sales receipt, along with the note sent by her husband to his new girlfriend.

"Just wanted to say that I love you and you mean the world to me!" read the greeting, according to the report.

Greer's wife has since filed for divorce - armed with the invoice as evidence of his infidelity.

For his part, Greer has filed suit against the floral company in his home state of Texas, blaming it for the breakup of his marriage.

Greer reportedly has accused the company of breach of contract, insisting a sales representative told him there would be no notice of the flower purchase sent to his home or business.

The ABA contacted the flower company, which responded: "we take all matters relating to our customers seriously."

It added however: "we are not responsible for an individual's personal conduct."

Hungary Claims World Kissing Title

Different Other Regions Record Z-Show All 2007-08-15 03:20
BUDAPEST, HUNGARY: Organisers of a kissing event in Budapest said Monday (August 13th) they have earned a place in the Guinness book of world records for the most number of couples locking lips at the same time.

They said they would submit video footage and documentation showing 7,451 couples were locked in simultaneous buccal bonding for 10 seconds on Sunday (August 19th), during a week-long Sziget music festival.

The marathon mouth meet was the latest saliva-laced salvo in a running rivalry between Hungary and the Philippines for the kissing crown.

Filipinos set the Guinness world record in February 2004 with 5,327 couples, only to be overtaken by Hungary, with 5,875 couples in 2005.

The Asian country came back in February this year, with 6,124 couples playing tonsil hockey in Manila to regain the record - but Hungary smacked them down again in June, when it produced 6,613 smooching couples.

With the latest effort, Hungary figures they have clinched the record for some time to come.

"We thought that here at the Sziget festival we can set a record which the Filipinos will not be able to beat. We'd like it if this record now belonged to Hungarians for good," said Zsuzsa Simon of the tabloid daily Bors, which organised the event.

West Virginia Has Best US University ... For A Good Party

Amusing Other Regions Record Z-Show All 2007-08-22 02:14
WASHINGTON, UNITED STATES: West Virginia University in the United States has been voted the best institute of higher education ... for party animals, an annual survey conducted by the Princeton Review showed Tuesday (August 22nd).

In fact, West Virginia University was ranked among the top 10 out in seven categories, beating stiff competition from some 365 other schools whose students took part in the survey.

Princeton Review asked 120,000 students at top universities across the United States to rate their schools in several categories, ranging from how book-wormish students are to how much beer is available.

West Virginia University ranked fifth in the "Best College Library" category, behind such prestigious institutions as first-placed Harvard and runner-up Princeton.

But its students also beat all other comers in the "almost never study" category.

It ranked sixth for beer consumption, seventh in the "lots of hard liquor category" and was beaten by Warren Wilson College in North Carolina to a measly 11th place for marijuana availability.

At the other end of the spectrum in the party school category was Brigham Young University in Utah, which was voted the "most stone-cold sober school."

Brigham Young, where the large majority of students are Mormons, also ranked tops for the number of students who pray on a daily basis.

Students at Virginia Tech said their school had the best cafeteria food, while George Washington University was voted the most politically active school - not unexpected as it is located in the US capital.

The best professors are to be found at Wellesley College in Massachusetts, alma mater of Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton.
And the toughest universities to get into are, in order, Harvard, Princeton, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale, all part of the so-called Ivy League on the east coast of the US, according to the study.

Underwear's Historic Role... In Western Learning

Amusing Different Environmental-friendly Fashion Other Regions Z-Show All 2007-07-13 06:37
LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM: Underwear underpins the spread of Western culture, with discarded underpants ranking alongside the invention of printing in the spread of literacy, according to a medieval historian.

Delegates at the International Medieval Congress at the University of Leeds, northern England, were told that social migration from rural to urban areas in the 13th century brought with it changes in attire.

Whereas rough and ready peasants thought little of wearing nothing under their smocks, the practice became frowned upon in the burgeoning towns and cities, leading to a run on undergarments.

And when the underwear was worn out, it provided a steady supply of material used by papermakers to make books.

"The development of literacy was certainly helped by the introduction of paper, which was made from rags," Marco Mostert, of Utrecht University in the Netherlands and one of the conference organisers, said this week.

"These rags came from discarded clothes, which cost much less than the very expensive parchment which was previously used for books.

"In the 13th century, so it is thought, as more people moved into urban centres, the use of underwear increased - which caused an increase in the number of rags available for paper-making."

The invention of the movable type printing press by Johannes Gutenberg in the mid-15th century is generally credited with spreading learning.

But Mostert said that although literacy did not become widespread until the 19th century, it was more common in the Middle Ages than many believe because of cheap paper made from rags.
