I have a folder which is locked up by windows XP. The folder contains huge data of approx 30 GB. This folder was originally located in "My Document" folder of a windows machine (XP SP2). The hard disk, which was primary drive in that computer, has been used as a secondary drive now in a different windows machine (XP SP2). The old computer is not available now. I noticed now the folder is not opened in the new computer despite having same login name and / or password and administrative privilages.

What should I do to get access into the folder?

Although you use the same username and password, it doesn't work all the time as your security ID no longer matches the security ID of the actual owner of the folder. There're some factors which might have caused this but the thing right now is to take the ownership of the new folder, for that you can try these steps.

1) Go to My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View, and under Advanced Settings unmark Use Simple file sharing ( Recommended)

2) Right click on the folder which you couldn't open and go to Properties > Security ( click ok if some stupid security message comes up ) > Advanced > Owner

3) From the name list chose your name or Administrator and click to select the "Replace owner on subcontainers and object " thingie. You should get some error/ warning messages keep on clicking yes :)

4) Hope it works . Don't forget to redo what you have undone in folder options .

Thanks Ramchandra for suggestion.

I solved the problem now. I was not allowed to modify those folder options (you mentioned in #1) despite having all administrative priviledges because that is available only in XP professional edition. My XP was a home edition so, I needed to go into safe mode to do that. Once I knew the reason, then it was just matter of click. So easy, couldn't believe, though it took about 3 hours to look into additional information, wait until rebooting a couple of times and changing the ownership of the folders.
