Royalists begin capital flight from Nepal: Report

Kathmandu, Dec 06: Fearful of their properties and businesses being confiscated after the Maoists come to power, members of Nepal's royal family, businessmen and former army officials loyal to King Gyanendra have started transferring their capital out of the country, a report said.

India, in fact, heads the list that include Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai, Hong Kong, Britain and Belgium as some of the favoured new destinations of Nepal's rich loyalists who are now concentrating on acquiring property or investing in businesses in these countries, Nepali weekly Jana Aastha reported Wednesday.

Gurgaon, a booming suburb of New Delhi, is amongst the places that have seen a rush by buyers from Nepal, many of whom are former army generals or senior officers, the report said.

Followers of King Gyanendra received a rude jolt earlier this year when a public revolt unseated the monarch and the new government of opposition parties said it would take over the property owned by the royal family in excess of the ceiling imposed by the law of the land.

Their jitters increased when landless Nepalis in Itahari in eastern Nepal, rejoicing after the fall of King Gyanendra's government in April, forcefully occupied a substantial stretch of land owned by a royal relative, Suraj Shumsher Rana.

Now there is a rush among royalists to sell their land in Nepal secretly and invest in properties and businesses outside the kingdom, the weekly said.

India comes across as the most favoured destination since a treaty between India and Nepal allows Nepalis to own property in India. Ironically, Nepal's communist parties, including the Maoists, have been pressing for the abolition or review of the treaty.

Among businessmen looking for safer investments abroad are leading industrialists from the Marwari community, it added.

Included in the group of those buying property or investing abroad is late king Birendra's son-in-law, Gorakh Shumsher Rana, the only survivor of the massacre in the royal palace in 2001 in which the king, queen and their three children as well as other royals were killed.

While Gorakh Rana is said to have bought property in London, King Gyanendra's nephews are said to have invested in Singapore, the report said.

The king's former trade partner Prabhakar Shumsher Rana, who fell out with the palace after Crown Prince Paras insulted his daughter-in-law and assaulted his son, is focusing on investments in Europe, the US and India.

A former army general who was made an ambassador, Prajwal Shumsher Rana, is said to have made investments in India and Belgium.

Communism has failed drastically in many countries and Sarojji thinks we shall overcome with the likes of Prachandra ruling our country. If you have family back home you wouldn't be singing this song. Our family back home deserve peace and stability and having a king with broader perspective doesn't sound like a bad idea. I am happy that doofy seems to be on the same page as me. Have a great weekend guys!!

.a few questions and opinions:

The notion of republic is nothing but a reminiscent of the mid 17th century England taken over by the Parliament and beheading of the King, leading the entire British Island to anarchy and chaos, even after the restoration of Monarchy.

We shouldn't forget the role(s) the monarchy had in the past, but in such, Nepalese people should just acknowledge the current development, and come to consensus by involving all political ideologies and not alienating pro-monarchist. Very difficult to do, but hey, if it works in Japan, so will in Nepal.

Anarchy and lawlessness have already begun, and the day is not far, for us to wonder on our solidarity, when the question of sovereignty arises.

When we know, communism doesn't work and the great people's states have collapsed, why would it work in Nepal? Let me assure you, Prachanda is not Mao and neither is he following the Mao's ideology or Lenin's or Marx's.

In the past, we have looked upon Monarchy to find solutions to problems caused by the government (e.g., Rana Bahadur, Tribhuvan and Mahendra). We may not the next time, but when it comes, we shall be no more called Nepalese. It would be too late...

I don't support Maoist at all. I just am asking how the king can be of any help to the nation when for hundred of years they couldn't do anything good for the country.

Jeez! Talk about delusions.

"unifying Nepal for 250 yrs without etnic violence or any civil wars before maoist problems"

Are you serious???????

What do you call cutting of lips and nose of all the Kirtipures? What do you call the massacre of Pradhans and Bhaktapures? What do you call the takeover of lands in Terai from the indigenous. No, you probably don't know about those because your royals did not allow those facts in the history book. Quite conveniently covered by so called shree paanch ko mahanbadi.

You want to talk about violence? I am sure you have heard of rapes and murders committed by the kings and princes in our history? Rajendra and Surendra were renowned for the atrocities, though too weak to stand up for themselves, they allowed the Ranas to take over who committed more repression under kings' authority.

You probably have heard of the phrase, " buck stops here." Guess what? Buck stops with the king. When the company is bankrupt, CEO gets fired. When the country goes bankrupt, king should get fired. And Gyanendra was self-declared CEO of his government.

Another person mentioned the monarchies of Japan and UK. How can you even compare our royals with theirs?

When McArthur took over Japan after it surrendered, Hirohito was summoned for a meeting. As his motorcade exited the palace ground and entered the Tokyo street, the traffic light turned red. You know what happened then and there? His car stopped until the light turned green. It was a subtle, yet powerful, point that he was making to his countrymen, that the god-emperor also is under the law.

Imagine that happening in Nepal. Just the other day, already congested traffic in Kathmandu was brought to stand still for hours because the royal family had to attend a relative's wedding. Not for 15 minutes or even 30 minutes, but for hours.

You probably saw in the news that Prince William finished his officer training at Sandhurst today. But did you see him working his ass off as a cadet to get that honor. Only few years back he was in South America cleaning toilets of an orphanage. Yes, someone who is second in line to the British throne cleaning toilets.

Can you imagine Paras doing any form of social service? He is too busy getting drunk, harassing girls, beating up their spouses, terrorizing common people, vandalizing other people's properties and cars, threatening to shoot policemen, and yes, murdering and raping people. Yet, knowing all this, Gyanendra named him Crown Prince, that too during Dashain in such a sneaky way.

And here you are comparing Shahs to Japanese and English royalties. Give me a break!

At least, there will be a modicum of self rule in a republic. We the people will hold the rein of our country, for good or bad. Therefore, I support Nepal to be a republic. I do NOT support Maoists. I do not agree with their modus operandi nor their philosophy. But neither am I in favor of status quo. I strongly believe that we have hit the rock bottom with monarchy and only way out is up from here on as a republic.

Mr dimple
I used to say king as incarnation of lord bishnu. You can't find the spirit of Lord Bhagwan VIshnu in the dirty royal place which is historicaly considered the grave of royal family not only the family of Birendra. It is such a nasty place where you will find incest, rape, homicide, suicide and massacre as the principle means of survival. I dont know why still people think king as a god. It is a terrible thought that would halt us from creating a good society in nepal. at least don't say king as a incarnation of lord. The people in England and Japan did not consider King as Jesus.Let us give a try by mainstreaming maiost in the politics. we will definitely have the corruption go down by almost half.

(What do you call cutting of lips and nose of all the Kirtipures? What do you call the massacre of Pradhans and Bhaktapures?")

the examples that you have put is shows your narrow minded mentality. what was your point? all the petty states of Nepal preunification should be disintegrated. I hope you seriously lack history knowledge. Look at the world history of 17th century. Look how the war was fought throughout the world at that time. look how countries were built at that time. No one in today's generation support such act.

you want to compare the war of 17th century with the war fought now after the geneva declaration. if you have the gut say " you need a seperate kirtipur state". Give me a clause in any contitution of nepal after the unification that segregates the kirtipures.

-((( the other day, already congested traffic in Kathmandu was brought to stand still for hours because the royal family had to attend a relative's wedding)))

Who manages the traffic of the kathmandu valley. who is the head of the traffic police. Who is the home minister. Who is the head of that home minister. We has the executive power. YOUR GOD FATHER GP KOIRALA IS RESPONSIBLE OF THE CAOS THAT WAS CAUSED.

Grow up guys. you might sell your words to the illeterate people in the rural area Nepal like the maoists but not to us.

Believe it or not, प्रज्ञा पथ was initiated jointly by प्रचण्डे and ज्ञाने . Both of them have had single goal, vanish democracy. After VATA-TA-TA, they were separated. You may have read an article written by Dr. Babu Ram Bhattarai, right after the royal massacre in which he said that they had कार्यगत एकता with King Birendra. I belive that not with King Birendra but with Gyaane. ज्ञाने ले अचानक धार बद्ले पछि वा के कुरा म भाग बन्दा न मिले पछि मात्र "प्र्" छुटेको ।

The notion that Shah dynasty saved Nepal from the Brits is a bunch of crap. The Brits took what they needed from Nepal during Sugauli Sandhi. They left the mountain kingdoms of Nepal, Bhutan & Sikkim alone. They understood the extra burden of conquering these mountains. They would have had to build railroads all the way to Ktm., Thimpu and Gangtok. The Shah kings of Nepal are all visionless, selfish, corrupt, cowards.

I dont know why people are against monarchy.I find people outside of Kathmandu have always over commented on this issue. They are ready to close eyes and shut their mouth when Joshi's , wagles and likes take billion of rupees but have problem with kings 63 crore takings.

I just know that if King is thrown out then our problem will start.

Have you lived in Nepal in this past 6 months. Corruption has started again and if you express different ideas you will be killed by so called Krantikari.

Is this what you call lok tantra?

The allegations and accusations sound so false and baseless. Why would Gyanendra have to kill his brothers and all those who died on June 1st 2001?? The power was theirs anyways and there was no enimity known among the brothers infact they loved one another dearly and helped out as much as they could to retain the kingship for the betterment of Nepal. Sorry to say but Nepal saw its worst in the recent days than 200 years ago, that should be an eye opener for everyone who is bickering about needing a change and in doing so thrusting the Country in the hands of blood hounds and scoundrels, beware if the king should be out of the picture Nepalese will probably have to see worse days than now, because how long can we tolerate threats made by the maoists in the name of freedom? who wants freedom at the cost of ones own life and livlihood???
