What you are saying is that these superstitions serve no purpose but they are so ingrained that you cant stop. Like quiting smoking they are not good for you but are automatic. So this is what the culture has done to you.

I'm really superstitious...i blow my hands whenever i touch my throat..i keep my fingers crossed all the time!!! i mean almost all the time...i do this "touchwood" thing after saying anything..i believe seeing two magpies is a sign of good luck...well if anyone sneezes before leaving i wait for sometime...this black cat crossing the road is something I'm really superstitious about I wait until someone else crosses the road..
