..place to ask about the procedure to build ISP. Anyway, I think the starting point is same as opening any company. May have to deal more with Nepal Telecom Authority. Or are you asking technical details on how to build ISP? Well, ISP means Internet Service Provider, right? Or I am just fooling myself answering your questions about something else.

Isps are connected to uplink called upper tier isps, or in case of Nepal it is nsp. I think ntc acts as an uplink to smaller isp as well as isp for general consumer. I think they have multiple gbps gateway to other world exchanges through Indian fiber gateway. You can have a deal with top level provider too through satellite (outdated, slow, expensive) or leasing fiber. If you really want to get even a few percentage of share of current market, I am sure you would need multiple crore or even arab rupees to penetrate the market now. World link, subisu, mercantile were multiple crore business even back in early 2000s. There were herd of isps in late 90s or early 2000s, but only few have them survived. This is pure technical field and changing so rapidly you are out of the market in few months if you do not get up to with technology. If you have money but you or few from your group do not have higher technical expertise on this then you are better off buying one of the isp which would sure to be muti crores deal. If you do not know anything about this business, then in an analogy your question is like how to open a bank, and how do they get all customers, money and trade in the bank, something you don't understand just from forum.

Alright gentlemen, First of all , if you are asking this question, I suggest you rather think very deeply and figure out if this is really what you want to do. Because I have a feeling that you are not an IT personnel and this is something you think that's going to be great for you. BUT I AM JUDGING, I AM HERE TO ANSWER THIS FOR YOU. ISP - Internet Service Provider. (In Nepal WLINK... etc) Three things you need for this. Level 1 : The Infrastructure ( Cables, telephone line etc) , This normally belongs to the telephone company and you make a deal with them, pay them certain fees etc. Level 2 : The Network level. This is a a little challenging, and it depends on what type of service you wan't to provide. Dialup, Cable, DSL etc. Level 3 : Authentication and access service. This is about who controls the username/passwords, IPs. billing etc. Who will control all these ? This is the first step of the business, if you are able to answer these questions, we can move over to the second level. Hope this helps. Sincerely, A Nepali.

>>who is the ultimate source of internet? NONE. You can build you own network or exchange so big that you can peer with other big networks and your network is in Internet. Top level provider in the world like level3 (www.level3.com). Also I am curious what makes you think building ISP and what is your plan/research so far? What is your investment, and who ate you targeting as your customer? Or is it just some class assignment you are trying to fulfill?

Who am I targeting? ----> Eastern Nepal. How much investment? ----> I am thinking of growing up from a small one; so i am thinking of investing up to a crore or 1.5 crore with one partnership which will be from within my relatives. I am from IT background but still I could not find the details to these things. Things learned: 1. Require infrastructure: ---> Thinking of using own house which is pretty big around 3500 sq ft. ----> Firewall: Probably will use cheap software based firewall to start with. ----> Modem, Router, Switches: Probably they don't cost so much due to chinese market. 2. Purchase bandwidth from NSP. 3. Use NEA's electric pools to carry wires. Ethernet is better than wireless. More information are appreciated.
