Parties finally strike deal on Regmi-led govt; CA elections by June 21

Ending a protracted political uncertainty after the demise of the Constituent Assembly (CA) on May 27 last year, the four major political forces arrived at a formal agreement to form an election government under the leadership of Chief Justice Khil Raj Regm Thursday night.

Leaders of four major parties - UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and Madhesi Front - raising hands...

The UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and Madhesi Front signed an 11-point political agreement apart from 25 points on removing the constitutional hurdles to forming the CJ-led "interim electoral council". The top leaders of the four parties signed the deal after a marathon meeting of over 13 hours, starting from 8 am.

As per the agreement, the 11-member CJ-led council of ministers will be comprised of former special class civil servants.

Deputy Prime Minister and Maoist vice chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha said the parties have agreed to hold the Constituent Assembly elections by June 21. Likewise, they have agreed to provide citizenship certificates to the children of those who got Nepali citizenship by virtue of birth.

Similarly, the parties have agreed to give one Colonel and two Lt Colonel posts to the former combatants when they formally get integrated into the Nepal Army.

A cabinet meeting held after the signing of the agreement endorsed the draft and forwarded it to the President for his approval.

CJ Regmi is to be sworn in as the head of the council of ministers tomorrow morning. He was to be sworn in at midnight according to initial plan, but it was put off in the last minute citing time constraint. nepalnews.com

Regardless of how this arrangement was reached, it has to be taken as a positive step with caution.
Parties elected a non-political candidate because they just can't stand any other party taking over. It's like when me and my sister had an argument over a cup-cake when we were kids, we settled it by giving it to our dog as we both didn't want each other to have it.
Positive, because if it a step towards something. However the election would turn-out and regardless of whether we will draft a constitution or not, it still is better than the null option.

What I don't like is how this government is fulfilling demands as if they have the right to do so. First of all, their term has ended and they have as much right as any other Nepali citizen now, no more no less. Then who gave them the right to give away the citizenships (to those born i the country) OR give up two senior officer position in Nepal Army? If they have this right, they might as well just draft a constitution themselves..better yet, don't draft anything and rule it the way they please.

This new agreement is a bullshit if the same politicians are going to participate in the next election. It's just a waste of time and money, there was already election n' not been able to write constitution and bet its gonna happen same again ( hope will not). It's just the game they are playing which they always does during overnight . Mofks!!!

To those who are thrashing this decision, be a little more positive.
In politics, it's not about who is the best, it's who is not the worst.
This situation is not the best, but better than the other options we had. As they say in Argo, "This is our best bad idea."

What else would you suggest that is realistic in the current political realm? You can't just expect a messiah to appear and lock up all the culprits and usher a new era of prosperity, can you?

Personally speaking, I see no hope for Nepal. There are no reasons yet to feel optimistic about anything.  Just some political horse trading going on. Nepal can have a 100 elections but the parties are the same. We will have the same scenario just a different PM or President each time.

This is nothing but a fight for chair. The only solution now is military rule. But we need a hardcore patriot at the helm. I hope i am proven wrong and of course i also seek something positive.

My initial thought was that this CJ led government will be responsible for drafting the constitution.
Then an election will be held and a new government will be formed which will be responsible for running the country.

But it looks like this CJ led government is only responsible for holding the election. Then the constitution drafting will be done by the political parties again.
Even if this is the case, it is a better step than the one we have now as it will create a legitimate government.

#Truely #sadly #deeply RIP NC congress, CPN UML. CJ is  a close ally of Maoists, which would give Maoists landslide victory in Nepal. and these so called democratic leaders from these parties would be swept away. Maoists and Madhesis would rape the country after election results. Sadly but I am seeing this probability in the near Future. I hope I would be wrong.
